Tristan and Isolde (Life) by Rogelio de Egusquiza (1912) Tristan (Latin/Brythonic: Drustanus; Welsh: Trystan), also known as Tristram, Tristyn or Tristain and similar names, is the hero of the legend of Tristan and Iseult. In the legend, he is tasked with escorting the Irish princess Iseult to wed Tristan's uncle, King Mark of Cornwall.

Der Name Tristan hat eine keltische und lateinische Herkunft. Das keltische Wort „drest" bedeutet übersetzt „der Lärm" und könnte in Verbindung mit dem Namen Tristan stehen. Wahrscheinlicher ist aber die Herleitung von dem lateinischen Wort „tristis", was übersetzt „traurig" bedeutet.
