Heyday – Heyday 1994
The self-titled debut album is one of those albums that make you wonder what they were thinking. For one thing, guitarist Ross the Boss (Manowar, the Dictators) is probably the last guy you'd expect to start an AOR/melodic rock band. The other head-scratcher is the fact that he waited until 1994 - the absolute peak of grunge - to do so.
That said; it's actually a pretty decent melodic rock album. It's a respectable mix-up of Mr. Big, Giant, and perhaps a dash of Night Ranger and Cheap Trick. It's exactly what you'd expect a melodic rock album to sound like - 5 years earlier. The standout tracks are a pair of cover songs - Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl and the Stooges' Search and Destroy - but the whole album is pretty solid.
Not surprisingly, the band never really took off, and this was the only Heyday release. Unless you're really obsessive about Ross the Boss, or have an unquenchable thirst for melodic rock albums, it's hard to recommend this album. If you run across a cheap used copy then by all means pick it up. I just can't see anyone going out of their way for this one.
