System of a Down is an Armenian-American heavy metal band formed in Glendale, California, in 1994. Since 1997, the band has consisted of Serj Tankian (lead vocals, keyboards); Daron Malakian (guitar, vocals); Shavo Odadjian (bass, backing vocals); and John Dolmayan (drums), who replaced original drummer Andy Khachaturian. Serj Tankian (/ s ɜːr dʒ ˈ t ɒ n k i ə n / TON-kee-ən, Armenian: Սերժ Թանգեան; born August 21, 1967) is a Lebanese-born Armenian-American musician and songwriter. He is best known as the founder, lead vocalist and primary lyricist of System of a Down, which was formed in 1994.
