The band released their first album in 1980 after a series of singles and independent demos, and continued releasing material and touring until their first breakup in 1985. The band reformed again in 1991, and released the Death & Progress album.
Ihr erstes Album, The White Album, erschien 1980 bei Happy Face Records. In Deutschland erschien das Album unter dem Titel Lightning to the Nations mit anderem Cover auf Woolfe Records. Sein Erfolg führte 1981 zu einem Plattenvertrag bei MCA Records.
MCA's and producer Mike Hedges' excessive tampering and the band's inability to just say "no" transformed Borrowed Time into a disappointing, vague reminder of their glorious first album (the fact that Sean Harris' mum acted as their manager didn't help matters any).
